瀬戸内国際芸術祭2025夏会期スタート！東讃の新会場で感じる、地域とアートの融合
今年もいよいよ、夏の瀬戸内がアート一色に染まる季節がやってきました。3年に一度、香川・岡山を中心に瀬戸内海の島々や沿岸地域を舞台に開催される、国内最大級の現代アートの祭典「瀬戸内国際芸術祭」。2025年の今回は、春・夏・秋の3会期にわたり多彩なアート体験が展開されますが、特にこの夏会期では、香川県東部（通称・東讃）に位置する東かがわ市の「引田エリア」、さぬき市の「志度・津田エリア」が新たに加わり、大きな注目を集めています。
今回はその新会場の様子や作品の魅力、地元とのつながりなど、熱気をたっぷりお届けします！
新たな舞台、東讃のまちにアートの風が吹く
歴史あるまちなみと漁港が残る引田は、古くから製塩や醤油づくりで栄えた風情ある港町。そんな引田の中心に位置する「讃州井筒屋敷」では、この日の開幕を祝う式典が行われました。
東かがわ市・上村一郎市長のあいさつに始まり、地元の保存会による太鼓と笛の演奏が町の空気を高揚させます。「引田は海とともに生きてきた町。この地でアートを迎えることができてうれしい」。その言葉には、地域に新たな息吹を吹き込もうという期待が滲んでいました。
引田エリアの見どころ：手袋のまちがアートで変身
引田エリアでまず目を引くのは、色とりどりの“手袋”をテーマにしたアート作品の数々。実は引田は、手袋製造の一大産地。大正時代から続くこの地域の代表産業にちなんで、手袋を素材・モチーフとしたインスタレーションが複数展示されています。
特に印象的なのが、市民から集めた古着を編み込んでつくった巨大な手袋のオブジェ。まるで港町の空に浮かぶシンボルのように、訪れる人々の視線を奪います。ほかにもペットボトルのキャップで地元の特産品を表現した作品など、地域との結びつきが色濃い展示が並びます。
志度・津田エリア：海と歴史の交差点にアートが息づく
続いて向かったのは、さぬき市の志度・津田エリア。こちらでは市役所前でオープニングセレモニーが行われ、香川県知事・池田豊人氏をはじめ、地域関係者やアーティストが勢ぞろい。今回の新会場での展示を通じて「海と歴史が調和するこの地の魅力を多くの人に知ってほしい」と語られました。
志度・津田エリアでは、国内外のアーティストによる5作品が展示されています。
中でも注目は、フィリピンのアーティスト・リーロイ・ニュー氏の「メブヤンのバランガイ」。志度に伝わる海女の伝説と、フィリピンの神話を融合させた、カラフルで生命力あふれるインスタレーションは、まるで未来の生命体のよう。鑑賞者に「この先の未来をどう切り開いていくか」という問いを投げかけます。
また、現代美術家・やんツー氏による「風雷讃甚」は、江戸時代の奇才・平賀源内を題材にした作品。空中に電気を放電させるという大胆な表現は、まるで“未来の雷神”のような迫力を感じさせます。
アートだけでなく、背景となる地域の歴史や文化を知ることで、作品の印象が何倍にも膨らむのが瀬戸芸の醍醐味でもあります。
犬島でも新展示、岡山エリアも動き出す
今回の夏会期は、香川県だけでなく岡山県側でも新しい動きがありました。たとえば、岡山市の犬島にある「犬島くらしの植物園」では、建築家・妹島和世氏が設計した新たな展示「HANA」が登場。高さ3メートルのステンレス製の花が2つ、自然の中で静かにたたずむ姿は、まるで未来と自然が融合したかのような景色。
また、玉野市では国内最大級の蓄電池工場「パワーベース」の一般公開が実施されており、アートとテクノロジーの交差点として注目されています。見学には事前予約が必要ですが、春会期でも多くの来場者を集めたこのエリアは、産業とアートの共存を実感できる貴重な機会となっています。
アートは旅のきっかけになる。地域に息づく“日常”との出会い
瀬戸内国際芸術祭は、アートを見るためのイベントであると同時に、「アートをきっかけに地域と出会う旅」でもあります。引田や志度・津田のように、これまで観光地としてはそれほど知られていなかった町が、アートを通じて人々の視線を集める。そして訪れた人々が、地元の人との会話や地場産品、まちの空気に触れ、また新たな物語を持ち帰っていく――その循環こそが、瀬戸芸の本質かもしれません。
夏会期は8月31日まで。引田・志度・津田エリアでは夜9時まで作品の鑑賞が可能です。日中の暑さを避けて、夕暮れからの“ナイトアート散策”もおすすめですよ。

Setouchi Triennale: Summer 2025 Brings Contemporary Art to New Venues in Eastern Kagawa
Once again, the season has arrived when the Setouchi region becomes immersed in art. Held once every three years, the Setouchi Triennale is one of Japan’s largest contemporary art festivals, taking place across the islands and coastal areas of the Seto Inland Sea, primarily in Kagawa and Okayama Prefectures. The 2025 edition is being held in three seasonal sessions—spring, summer, and autumn—with a wide variety of art experiences. Among these, the summer session is drawing special attention as it welcomes two new venues in Eastern Kagawa (commonly referred to as Tōsan): the Hiketa area of Higashikagawa City and the Shido/Tsuda area of Sanuki City.

A New Stage for Art: The Winds of Creativity Blow Through Eastern Kagawa
With its historical streets and fishing port, Hiketa is a nostalgic town that once thrived with salt production and soy sauce brewing. At the heart of this town is Sanshu Izutsu Yashiki, which served as the venue for the opening ceremony on the festival’s first day.
Mayor Ichiro Kamimura of Higashikagawa City opened the ceremony, followed by performances of traditional drums and flutes by local preservation groups, which brought an uplifting spirit to the area. “Hiketa is a town that has lived with the sea,” said the mayor. “We’re honored to welcome art to this land.” His words reflected a strong hope that art would breathe new life into the region.
Highlights of the Hiketa Area: A Glove Town Transformed Through Art
What first catches the eye in Hiketa are the colorful glove-themed artworks. Hiketa is actually one of Japan’s leading glove-producing regions, with its glove-making industry dating back to the Taisho era. Several installations use gloves both as a material and a motif, paying homage to this local legacy.
One particularly striking piece is a massive glove sculpture woven from secondhand clothing collected from over 350 local residents. Floating like a symbol above the port town, it captivates visitors with its presence. Other works include depictions of local specialties made from recycled bottle caps, emphasizing the deep relationship between the artworks and the community.
Shido & Tsuda: Where Sea and History Meet Art
Next, we visited the Shido and Tsuda area in Sanuki City. Here, an opening ceremony was held in front of the city hall, with Kagawa Governor Toyohito Ikeda, local leaders, and artists in attendance. Speaking at the event, they expressed a desire to “showcase the charm of this area, where sea and history exist in harmony, to the world through art.”
This area features five works by artists from Japan and abroad.
One of the standout installations is “Barangay of Mabuyan” by Filipino artist Leeroy New. Inspired by both Filipino mythology and a local legend of ama (female divers) passed down in Shido, the vibrant and powerful piece resembles a lifeform from the future. It challenges visitors with the question: “How will we navigate the future from here?”
Another work by Japanese contemporary artist yang02 is titled “Fūrai Sanjin”—a piece inspired by Edo-period polymath Gennai Hiraga, who was born in Sanuki. The work features electric discharges in midair, a bold artistic expression evoking the force of a mythical thunder god.
One of the unique appeals of the Setouchi Triennale is how understanding the background of the artwork—including its historical and cultural ties to the region—can significantly deepen your experience.
New Exhibits on Inujima: Okayama’s Side Comes Alive
The summer session isn’t limited to Kagawa—Okayama Prefecture also brings fresh excitement. On Inujima Island in Okayama City, a new installation titled “HANA”, designed by architect Kazuyo Sejima, has made its debut at the Inujima Life Garden. The artwork consists of two stainless steel floral sculptures standing nearly 3 meters tall, blending harmoniously into the surrounding natural environment—an image of future and nature becoming one.
Additionally, in Tamano City, the Power Base—Japan’s largest lithium-ion battery plant—is being opened to the public for the first time during the summer session. Designed by Kazuyo Sejima and run by PowerX, this cutting-edge facility is drawing attention as a point where art meets technology. While tours require advance reservations, this venue drew thousands during the spring session and offers a rare glimpse into the coexistence of industry and contemporary art.
Art as a Journey: Encounters with Local Life
The Setouchi Triennale is not just about seeing art—it’s about meeting the people, cultures, and landscapes that shape it. Places like Hiketa and Shido/Tsuda, which were previously lesser-known as tourist destinations, are now capturing hearts and imaginations through art. Visitors engage with locals, sample regional specialties, breathe in the atmosphere, and return home with new stories. This cycle of connection and rediscovery may be the true essence of the festival.
The summer session runs through August 31, and the Hiketa and Shido/Tsuda areas offer nighttime viewing until 9 PM. To avoid the heat, a sunset or evening art stroll is highly recommended.
